Tonight we are safely billeted at Tyndall Air Force Base in their Famcamp about 7 miles east of Panama City Florida on Highway 98.
Below is the approach to the "airborne bridge" which starts near Breaux Bridge Louisiana and ends at Grosse Tete and is a real marvel of engineering and must have been a real challenge to construct. We have been down it from its initial stages and it is a great piece of roadwork.
As you come into Mississippi you hit the MS welcome center at the Stennis NASA facility and it is pretty cool. We didn't go over to the real NASA facility here but the intro and setup is neat and worth a visit with some more time.
From our last stop, Biloxi was about 275 miles making it a good place to pause for a night. Consulting our trusty Good Sam book we hit the Cajun RV park there, rated at the top .... jeez ... just like our Branson experience. After last night which was a perfect park in all respects here is one rated equally and an absolute dump. Mud and dirt and sandburrs, share the electric outlets, crappy office and facilities ... don't know who gets the bribery money at Good Sam but it must be a good payoff to even list this crappy place.
And because the park isn't right on the beach, your half mile walk toward water leads you here ... to some destroyed motel foundations and not much else. In fact the only civilization or eatery is down the beach a couple of miles in this picture.
Here is a more closeup of what's left of Biloxi ... not much. The last hurricane in the last series of several monsters has left Biloxi a ruin and it will be a long time before the beachfront will ever recover. All that is left is miles of foundations and for sale signs ... pretty sad.
Sad for me as I have been coming along this coastline since 1967 and have watched it try to recover from the latest massive storm and then get hammered again. After suffering through Biloxi we trucked on to the east for about 220 miles along the beach road 98, through Panama City and found Tyndall AFB where we have come before on business but never to the Famcamp. Nice place in the pines and palmetto and I'll talk more about it as we will be here till Monday.
